Droplet Size Reference Guide

Understand Dv50, Dv90, and VMD โ€” what they mean, how nozzle type and pressure affect droplet size, and the target ranges for key industrial applications.

Dv50

Volume Median Diameter

50% of the total spray volume is contained in droplets smaller than this diameter. This is the most commonly cited single-number droplet size specification.

Example: Dv50 = 200 ยตm means half the spray volume is in droplets smaller than 200 microns.
Dv90

90th Percentile Diameter

90% of the total spray volume is in droplets smaller than this value. Dv90 characterizes the coarser end of the distribution and is critical when large droplets must be avoided โ€” such as in humidification or coating.

Example: Dv90 = 400 ยตm means only 10% of the spray volume is in droplets larger than 400 microns.
VMD

Volume Mean Diameter

The diameter of a droplet whose volume, if all droplets had that volume, would equal the total spray volume. VMD is closely related to Dv50 but slightly different for non-symmetric distributions.

In practice, VMD and Dv50 are often used interchangeably in industrial nozzle specifications.

Droplet Size Reference Table

Typical Dv50 ranges by nozzle type at standard operating pressures. Actual values vary by orifice size, flow rate, and liquid properties.

Nozzle Type Typical Dv50 Range (ยตm) Pressure Sensitivity Category Primary Use Cases
Air-Atomizing 10 โ€“ 100 ยตm High โ€” air-to-liquid ratio dominates Ultra-Fine Humidification, coating, chemical injection
Fine Mist / Fog 20 โ€“ 150 ยตm Moderate โ€” finer at high pressure Ultra-Fine / Fine Humidification, dust suppression, evaporative cooling
Hollow Cone 100 โ€“ 600 ยตm Moderate Fine / Medium Dust suppression, evaporative cooling, gas scrubbing
Flat Fan 150 โ€“ 700 ยตm Moderate โ€” finer at higher pressure Medium Coating, washing, agricultural spray
Full Cone 200 โ€“ 1,000 ยตm Low to Moderate Medium / Coarse Tank filling, washdown, fire suppression, cooling
Solid Stream 1,000 ยตm+ Low Very Coarse Washdown, high-impact cleaning, tank filling

Application Droplet Size Targets

Application Target Dv50 Range Why Droplet Size Matters Recommended Nozzle Type
Humidification 10 โ€“ 50 ยตm Fine droplets evaporate before reaching surfaces; coarse droplets cause wetting Air-atomizing, fine mist
Dust Suppression 30 โ€“ 200 ยตm Droplets must match particle size to agglomerate effectively; too fine = drift Hollow cone, fine mist
Evaporative Cooling 20 โ€“ 150 ยตm High surface area maximizes evaporation; must evaporate before surfaces Fine mist, hollow cone
Coating / Finishing 50 โ€“ 300 ยตm Uniform coverage; coarse droplets cause runs, fine droplets cause dry spray Air-atomizing, flat fan
Industrial Washdown 500 โ€“ 2,000+ ยตm Coarse droplets carry more momentum for surface impact and cleaning Full cone, flat fan, solid stream
Tank Cleaning / CIP 500 โ€“ 2,000+ ยตm Impact force and coverage pattern more important than droplet fineness Full cone, spray balls

Educational reference only. Droplet size ranges are general guidance based on typical hydraulic nozzle performance. Actual droplet size for a specific nozzle at specific conditions requires independent measurement or NozzlePro application data. Droplet size is influenced by liquid viscosity, surface tension, density, orifice geometry, and operating pressure. Contact NozzlePro for application-specific droplet size guidance.
